Warning signs associated with drug use and addiction

There are many different types of warning signs of drug use and addiction, which is dependent upon the type of drug the person is using. Some of the more common types of drug use that can lead to addiction include prescription medicines. According to the Mayo Clinic, many people need help from their doctor, family, friends or support groups in order to overcome their drug addiction.

The following is a list of common warning signs that can let others know when someone is addicted to or abusing drugs.

#1 Changes in physical appearance

When someone is no longer providing themselves with proper personal care, e.g., dirty clothes, not brushing their teeth, body odors, etc., it is a definite sign of drug use.

#2 Shows new and unusual characteristics

Someone not acting like themselves and displaying new and unusual behaviors is often a sign of drug use, e.g., always being secretive, not being able to communicate properly, constantly sniffing, etc. When someone is addicted to drugs, they often no longer care about anyone or anything else, just the drug.

#3 — Financial problems

Drug use tends to be expensive, making it so that many people will spend all their money, including their savings, in order to buy their drug of choice. When someone who is addicted to drugs runs out of money, they will often ask people they know to borrow money and will even steal money if necessary.

#4 Lack of responsibility

When someone is abusing drugs, they will often neglect their everyday responsibilities in life. This often includes always being late to work or neglecting to go at all, not properly taking care of one’s home and even neglecting to properly take care of children.
