Inpatient vs. Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment

If you are looking for information on substance abuse treatment, then that is a good sign that either you or someone you know is going to get the help they need for any substance abuse problems. Being addicted to drugs can be a terrible experience, and for that reason, treatment should be sought as soon as absolutely possible. If the person addicted to drugs is showing an interest in treatment, that means they are open to exploring any options that can allow them to break free of their addiction.

Inpatient treatment

Inpatient treatment programs are more intensive than outpatient treatment programs, as they are focused on treating more serious substance abuse addictions. Inpatient programs are also known as residential treatment programs because the patient will need to stay in the treatment facility on a 24-hour basis. The controlled environment is highly preferred for those with more serious addiction problems, as there is more time for them to focus on doing what is necessary for them to break free from their addiction.

Inpatient substance abuse treatment can last anywhere from one to six months.

Outpatient treatment

Outpatient treatment programs are also known as part-time substance abuse treatment programs. They are often chosen for those who have jobs or go to school and cannot take the time off to participate in an inpatient treatment program. Many outpatient treatment programs require patients to visit a certain number of hours every week, with about 12 hours being the norm. During the visit, the patient will learn about their substance abuse problem, as well as participate in both individual and group counseling.

Outpatient substance abuse treatment can last anywhere from three to 18 months.
